PCGS SP63 (59818158).
Special strike (SP), with satin-finish relief on mirror fields. With embossed edge DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. A few minute traces of lamination on the right side. The minting is neat. Only minimal marks of contact to be announced on the high points of the relief, in particular on the right and a fine scratch on the left of the cursive Tr allowing to confirm the pedigree. Almost corner flower.
In August 1807, the Monetary Administration requested that a laurel wreath be added to "the head of our August Emperor". For 15 August, the Minister added that he would like to see two prestige gold examples of the 5 franc coin minted, "to be presented to the Emperor on his feast day". On 10 August, Brenet handed over the new effigy mark, which was ready, to Tiolier to start minting as soon as possible. On 13 August, the Mint Administration indicated that the 2 gold examples requested would be minted, plus 25 other gold blanks that had been prepared. On 24 August, however, the Director requested reimbursement for 38 coins "struck for medals" (and not 27), 37 of which had been given "to His Imperial Majesty on 17 August". Combrouse, Décaméron, 1844 indicates the existence of this prestigious coinage in the collections of the "Musée monétaire (the specimen taken from the 38 no doubt), and Bucquet, Bursio, Dassy, De Reichel, Rousseau, and in several families where this beautiful coinage was used as a wedding piece" [work by P. Théret and M. Taillard, le FRANC, Napoléon Ier, 2023].
