FRANCE - FRANCE First Empire / Napoleon I (1804-1814). Medal, birth of the King of Rome (Napoleon II), by I. Schmidt 1811, Paris. Av. NAPOLEON FRANCOIS JOSEPH - CHARLES KING OF ROME. Bust on the left, signature I. SCHMIDT F and in the exergue XX MARS MDCCCXI. Rv. VIRTVS PRINCIPIS FIRMAMENTVM REIPVBLICAE. The King of Rome, naked and seated on a blanket, as Hercules with a snake in each hand. Br.1108 - Jul.2443 - Ess.1348 ; Silver - 41 mm - 12 h NGC MS 63 (8583623-040). Special strike with slightly satiny relief. Only minor handling marks and a very nice iridescent grey patina. Superb at Fleur de coin. The King of Rome was born on 20 March 1811: Napoleon was his father's first name, François that of his maternal grandfather, Charles that of his paternal grandfather and Joseph that of his godfather. He was emperor, under the name of Napoleon II, from 4 April to 6 April 1814 and from 22 June to 7 July 1815.
