Son of Clotaire II and half-brother of Dagobert I, Caribert II received the kingdom of Aquitaine in 629. This territory, with Toulouse as its capital, remained subject to the kingdom of Dagobert I. Caribert II died on 8 April 632, leaving a son just a few years old, Chilperic, whose premature death enabled Dagobert I to recover the kingdom.
