The port of Quentovic (Wiccus, also called Wic in Pontio) was located in the Canche estuary (Pas-de-Calais), between Montreuil and Étaples. Between the 7th and 10th centuries, Quentovic was the Frankish kingdom's main trading port with England. It was also the region's main monetary workshop, whose activity is attested to from around 580 to 675 by the issue of numerous gold tremissis. Its prosperity declined as a result of the Viking raids, which plundered the town on several occasions, and also due to the silting up of the River Canche. According to J. Lafaurie, the effigy depicted on the right-hand side of this tremissis is reminiscent of the portrait of Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, raising his eyes to heaven in an attitude of prayer.
