FRANCE ORDRE DE LA LÉGION D'HONNEUR - ORDER OF THE CROWN OF IRON Barette belonging to General Jacques Gervais Subervie, Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour, circa 1813 Composed of two miniatures in gold with blue enamel fillets, it presents two miniatures: - a gold eagle of the 4th type, in gold and enamel, obverse of the centre with the radiant profile of the Emperor and the legend "NAPOLEON EMP DES FRANC". - a knight's badge of the Iron Crown, in chased and enamelled silver (small chips) with crown tips, medallion with the Emperor's profile in gold. Mounted on a ribbon woven in the colours of the two orders, with a puffed bow. The set is framed under glass (cracked, not faded) with a handwritten inscription on the reverse: "Ruban aux ordres de la Légion d'honneur et de la Couronne de Fer, worn by General Baron Subervie Grand Chancelier of the Legion of Honour in 1848 (General Subervie commanded the 5th Cavalry Division at Waterloo)". 12 x 12 cm T.T.B. Provenance : Former Napoleonic collection of the Prince's Palace of Monaco (1st sale, lot 62) A pin with the order of the Legion of Honour and the order of the Iron Crown, composed of two miniatures in gold and blue enameled frame Commentary: Jacques Gervais SUBERVIE (1776-1856) He entered the army on 23 July 1793, and fought with distinction in all the campaigns that led to the treaties of Campo-Formio, Lunéville and Tilsitt. In 1797, he became aide-de-camp to Lannes and fought with him in the Egyptian Campaign. A squadron leader in 1803, he was promoted to colonel of chasseurs after his brilliant conduct at Ulm and Austerlitz. On 27 May 1807, he was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour. After the Prussian campaign, he was transferred to Spain in 1808. Colonel of the 10th regiment of mounted chasseurs, he led this regiment in the campaigns of 1808, 1809, 1810 and 1811 in Spain. Appointed brigadier general, he fought in the Russian campaign of 1812. On 4 July, he charged General Korf's division and drove it back to the Desna, after taking 200 prisoners. He was wounded at the Moskova. In 1814, he fought at Montereau, Champaubert, Brienne, and was wounded during the defence of Paris. He became a division general. In 1815, during the Hundred Days, he commanded a light cavalry division in the Armée du Nord, and fought at Ligny and Waterloo on 16 June and 18 June. He was laid off on the return of the Bourbons and retired in 1825. Elected as a deputy in 1834, he was constantly re-elected until 1848, except between 1839 and 1842, and was part of the Liberal opposition. After the revolution of February 1848, he became Minister of War in the provisional government, but resigned on 19 March, when he was appointed Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour. After the coup d'état of 2 December, Subervie retired from public life and died in 1856. Subervie had been made a Knight of the Iron Crown on 28 December 1813.
