Historical background :
Although the circumstances surrounding the presentation or donation of this companion's badge to General de Gaulle are unknown, it is one of the only known examples of an ordinance size in precious metal, in addition to its prestigious provenance.
Photographs and images of the General wearing the Liberation Cross are particularly rare. However, it should be noted that he was wearing the insignia of the order he founded on 14 July 1941 in Brazzaville (1st type ribbon). According to current research, this is the only occasion on which he wore the companion's insignia.
He also wore the collar of the order, notably on his official portrait as President of the Republic.
Provenance :
- Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970)
- Then Admiral Philippe de Gaulle (1921-2024)
- Then descendants
