History: Francesco Antommarchi (1789-1838), an anatomist, was sent to St Helena as a doctor in 1819. He assisted the English physician Burton in taking a death mask of the Emperor in several parts. In 1833, following Dr Burton's death, Francesco Antommarchi launched a subscription for this death mask, sponsored by General Bertrand, General Gourgaud, the Count of Flahaut, two of Marshal Ney's sons and others. The bronze model cost 100 francs, while the plaster model cost 20 francs.
