Lot no. 109
FRANCESCO TREVISANI (Koper, 1656 - Rome, 1746) Magdalene Oil on canvas, 30.5X23 cm Formerly attributed to Marcantonio Franceschini and Giovanni Domenico Ferretti, the painting was traced back to Francesco Trevisani's catalogue by Francesco Petrucci due to the clear stylistic motifs supported by the high quality of execution. The scholar also noted that the composition is unmatched and the other versions are variations on the theme, but with significant differences. Having said this, the image is of considerable scenic effect and the autography is dictated by the aesthetic value, such as the pigmentation of the complexions and the warm luminosity that makes the figure stand out in the round. As we know, Francesco Trevisani trained in Venice in the workshop of Antonio Zanchi and moved to Rome in 1678, where he benefited from the protection of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni. In the Eternal City, the artist approached the classicism of Carlo Maratti and Giovanni Battista Gaulli, but without losing his stylistic autonomy. In our case, the work can be dated to the first decades of the 18th century and finds a precedent with the Magdalen he painted in 1708 for Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, now in the Weissenstein Castle in Pommersfelden (cf. Di Federico 1977, cat. 40, pp. 49-50, fig. 32), but in our case the outcome is decidedly more sensual and fully participant in the European rocaille taste. We thank Francesco Petrucci for the attribution. Reference bibliography: F. R. Di Federico, Francesco Trevisani. Eighteenth-Century Painter in Rome. A Catalogue Raisonné, Washington 1977, ad vocem G.
