Lot no. 76
Francesco TREVISANI (Capodistria, 1656 - Rome, 1746) Christ in contempt Pastel The Mocking of Christ, pastel, by F. Trevisani 31.49 x 22.63 in. 80 x 57.5 cm Provenance: Rossella Gilli Collection, Paris The texture of our pastel is very precious, almost milky. The whiteness of Christ's body contrasts with the redness of the torturers, in a classic colour binarity. In our pastel, Christ is tied up and held by a guard, while behind him we get the impression that his torturer is preparing to whip him. Our Christ in Outrage must have been painted around 1695-1696, when Trevisani was working on a Passion of Christ in four pictures for San Silvestro in Capite in Rome: The Mocked Christ, The Flagellation, The Ascent to Calvary and The Agony of Christ. A pupil of Antonio Zanchi in Venice, Francesco Trevisani then moved to Rome, where he came into contact with the classical milieu of Carlo Maratta. He enjoyed considerable success as a portraitist and history painter. Very few of Trevisani's pastels are known. Neil Jeffares lists only two in his online database1. 1. J.726.101 and J.726.102 (consulted online on 21 February 2025) Francesco TREVISANI (Capodistria, 1656 - Rome, 1746) 80 x 57.5 cm The texture of our pastel is very precious, almost milky.
