FRANCIS PICABIA (1879 Paris 1953) Milynia. 1929. Tempera on paper. Signed lower left: Francis Picabia, as well as titled lower right: MILYNIA. 53 x 40 cm. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Olga Picabia, Paris, 1984. Provenance: - Galeria Joan Prats, Barcelona. - Private collection, Switzerland, bought before 1984 at the above gallery. - Private collection, Switzerland, 1994 by descent from the above to the present owner. Exhibitions: - Dusseldorf 1983, Francis Picabia, Städtische Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, 23 October - 4 December 1983. - Zurich 1984, Francis Picabia, Kunsthaus Zurich, 3 February - 25 March 1984. - Stockholm 1984, Picabia, Moderne Museet Stockholm, 7 April - 27 May 1984. The extensive series of "Transparences" were executed between c. 1928 and c. 1931. The effect of overlapping faces had already been suggested in his previous group of works “Monstres". Picabia was intrigued by the concept of transparency and fascinated by the idea of rendering it in paint. In these works Picabia often referenced figurative imagery drawn from classical, Renaissance and Baroque sources. The titles are usually invented names that seldom match with a corresponding legend. This is also the case with the present work, "Milynia", which hints at a mythological source, yet does not refer to any known figure or story. Picabia additionally extended the complexity of these compositions of disparate human forms by superimposing them with layers of meanings. "This third dimension, not made of light and shadow, these transparencies with their corner of oubliettes permit me to express for myself the resemblance of my interior desires ... I want a painting where all my instincts may have a free course …" (quoted in William A. Camfield: Francis Picabia his art, life, and times, p. 239). FRANCIS PICABIA (1879 Paris 1953) Milynia. 1929. Tempera auf Papier. Unten links signiert: Francis Picabia, sowie unten rechts betitelt: MILYNIA. 53 x 40 cm. Die Authentizität des Werkes wurde von Olga Picabia bestätigt, Paris, 1984. Provenienz: - Galeria Joan Prats, Barcelona.
