Bronze, gold-coloured cold patination. Signed; black, polished stone plinth. Antique-style statuette of the mythological Greek Calliope in corresponding dress, as the muse of epic poetry, rhetoric, philosophy and science with her attributes writing tablet and stylus in her hands. The sculptor François Mage was a pupil of François Rude and exhibited several times at the Salon in Paris between 1861 and 1875. His figures depict romantic, allegorical and classical motifs.
