Never before in the memory of a journalist has a Prime Minister allowed himself to be photographed in such casual attire.
Georges Pompidou, taking a few days off in Brittany in August 1965, was splashing around, landing net in hand, fishing for prawns like an ordinary holidaymaker. He was to keep up this simplicity when he was elected to the Élysée Palace.
August 1969, Pompidou is at the helm, at the Fort de Brégançon. Whether in a car or a boat, the President loved speed. Which didn't make it any easier for Claude, his wife, to get the shot. They both love the sun and the Mediterranean. Under pressure from General de Gaulle, they gradually had to give up the glitz and glamour of Saint-Tropez. But once in the Élysée Palace, Georges Pompidou set his sights south again at Brégançon, the presidential residence. The fort did not yet have a beach, but there was something better: an Arcoa corvette for escaping and swimming in the sea.
