Lot no. 35
François POMPON Foulque - 1925 Vintage proof no. 1, in bronze with a matt black patina shaded with brown Signed "POMPON", numbered "N1" and stamped "Cire perdue C. Valsuani" on the back on the terrace 28.3 × 20 × 6.5 cm - Terrace: 19.5 × 6.5 cm Source : Galerie Saint-Pierre, Lyon Former Joseph Brochier collection To the present owner by descent This lot will be sold with a certificate of authenticity from Madame Liliane Colas. History : Following the success of his 1923 poule d'eau, Pompon exhibited the Foulque, then known as the Nouvelle poule d'eau, for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Animaliers in 1924. Resolutely modern, it moves forward without reference to the surrounding nature, its legs in motion, accentuated by the twist of its neck. In 1925, five coots were listed in the account book with their number from 1 to 5 and sent to the Galerie St Pierre in Lyon, from which our model was probably acquired by Joseph Brochier, a famous silk manufacturer in Lyon, and has remained in his family to this day. It has reappeared almost a century after its creation, more modern than ever. A similar model is in the Musée d'Orsay collections under inventory number RF 4051.
