François Rude (1784 Dijon - 1855 Paris) after The education of Achilles by the centaur Chiron Bronze, dark patina. Fully sculpted, finely worked, detailed mythological group in a 19th century French cast; Rude was one of the most important French sculptors in the first half of the 19th century; he was inspired to create the present bronze by the monumental painting by Jean-Baptiste Régnault (1754 - 1829), completed in 1783, which is now in the Louvre. In 1809, Rude went to Paris and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Pierre Cartellier; in 1812 he was awarded the Prix de Rome, but was unable to claim it due to historical circumstances. In 1815, he moved in with his family-in-law in Brussels, where he worked with the architect Charles van der Straeten and carried out commissions for palaces, castles, monuments and buildings for King William I, among others. In 1827, Rude returned to Paris, in 1833 he was admitted to the Legion of Honour and created a high relief for the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile - "La Marseillaise", which cemented his fame. In 1855, Rude received a medal of honour at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Approx. 44 cm x 44 cm x 22 cm. Provenance: Dissolution of an important German private collection - Part II.
