France Emili, Paolo De rebus gestis Francorum ... libri Decem. Ex postrema auctoris recognitione. Additum est de Regibus item Francorum Chronico ... With several large woodcut initials. Paris, Michel de Vascosan and Galliot Ier Du Pré, 1544 (1543). 4 vols, 244 p., 48 vols. Folio. Restored cloth of the period with bow lines, corner fleurons, gilt-stamped centrepieces and mod. R label (somewhat stained, rubbed and bumped). BP16 111680 - Adams A 234 - Brunet I, 64 - Paolo Emili (lat. Paulus Aemilius) was called to France under Charles VIII to write a chronicle of the country. He published the first four volumes in 1517, the next two in 1519 and, on his death in 1529, left enough material to write four more volumes, a task that was taken on by his friend and compatriot Zavarizzi. The first edition of the complete work was published by Vascosan in 1539. The work was criticised for its declamatory tone and pro-French bias, but remains an important source for the history of the fifteenth century. - Endpapers renewed. Title page somewhat soiled and with small marginal tears. Following 2 vols. with incision. Only slightly browned and a little stained. Overall a very good copy.
