France Scrapbook with approx. 300 coloured French caricatures. Around 1790-1830, various techniques, including lithography, wood engraving, stipple engraving and copper engraving, each hand-coloured. Mounted on 200 fol. Folio. Central binding with heraldic gilt embossed design, richly re-gilt and gilt embossed ribbon marker, three gilt edges and marbled endpapers. Gilt edges and marble endpapers (rubbed, bumped and scuffed, joints chipped). On the spine label with the title Inventaire de Mr de Brion. - Contains caricatures cut out in outline, especially those depicting the upper bourgeoisie in post-revolutionary France, but also numerous caricatures of the English bourgeoisie. As the printed titles and signatures have often been removed, these have been added in the neat handwriting of the time. Among the famous authors of the lively and satirical scenes are Carle and Horace Vernet, Draner and Honoré Daumier as well as numerous illustrations from Le Bon Genre. Satirical documentation of the emergence of modern Paris and the aspiring bourgeoisie as well as English visitors to the city, whose customs and traditions the French regarded as incomprehensible and unfashionable. - The album pages somewhat browned and brownstained.
