Frans van Mieris der Jüngere folgte seinem Großvater gleichen Namens sowie seinem Vater Willem als Maler von Genrebildern, darüber hinaus schuf er Bildnisse und mythologische Szenen. Zu diesen zählt dieses signierte Gemälde mit der Darstellung von Bacchus und Ariadne, das in der Figuren- und Landschaftsdarstellung vergleichbar ist mit einem 1712 datierten und signierten „Diana und Endymion“ des Künstlers (Christie´s, Amsterdam, 27.11.1986, Lot 46). In beiden Gemälden bildet das Götterpaar das Zentrum der Bildkomposition, die Landschaft wird bestimmt von einer exakten Wiedergabe der Details in der Tradition der Leidener Feinmalerei, zudem vom warmen Bildlicht in der Tradition der Italianisanten. Frans van Mieris the Younger took after his grandfather of the same name as a painter of genre scenes, but he also painted portraits and mythological motifs, among them this signed depiction of Bacchus and Ariadne. The figures and landscape of this image are similar to a signed “Diana and Endymion” by the artist, dated 1712 (Christie's, Amsterdam, 27.11.1986, lot 46). In both paintings, the divine couple forms the centre of the composition and the landscape is characterised by extreme attention to detail in the tradition of Leiden glaze painting, but also by the warm light typical of the Italianates.
