Franz Heckendorf (1888 Berlin - 1962 Munich)
Coastal landscape with small town and sailing boats
Heckendorf's main Expressionist work from 1927 from a series of views of mostly Mediterranean harbour towns from the 1920s. The dynamics of the condensed presentation and a tight contouring with a formally abbreviated, two-dimensional rendering are typical. Heckendorf exhibited regularly at the "Berliner Secession" from 1909 and was a member of the jury from 1917. During the Weimar Republic, Heckendorf was one of the most convincing and prominent Expressionists alongside the "Brücke" artists. During the "Third Reich" Heckendorf was ostracised, his paintings were considered "degenerate art" from 1937; the resistant artist was imprisoned from 1943-1945. Oil on canvas; signed a. dat. (19)27. 57 cm x 75 cm. Frame.
