Franz Ivan Roubaud (1856-1928)
The artist Franz Roubaud Ivan was born in Odessa (today in Ukraine) and moved to Munich in 1877, where he began his studies at the Academy of Arts and took private painting lessons from the battle-painter Josef von Brandt (1841-1915 ). In 1882/84, he was enabled through the support of the Russian Tsar Alexander III. to go on a first trip to the Caucasus; the depiction of Central Asia and mainly the Caucasian areas should then determine most of his horse- and battlefield paintings. Roubaud was appointed professor of the Academy of Arts in Munich in 1891. In addition, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1903. His works were exhibited at the Munich Crystal Palace several times and were also included in the major international art exhibitions in St. Petersburg and Berlin. Roubaud's popularity at the time of the 19th century is justified not only by his outstanding performance as an historical and battle painter, but has also been significantly influenced by his well-known patrons such as the Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II as well as the Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. Among his most famous works is the 100 meter panoramic painting ‘The Siege of Sevastopol’, executed in 1904.
