Franz Krüger. (1797 Großbadegast - 1857 Berlin) attr; King Frederick William III of Prussia Representative bust portrait with the right corner of the "Old Museum" in Berlin, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, built by order of the King from 1825 and inaugurated in 1830, in the background. With his body turned slightly to the right and his head turned to a quarter profile, Frederick William had himself portrayed in a dark blue general's uniform coat as supreme warlord after his victory over Napoleon. He is wearing the highest honours of the Holy Alliance: the eight-pointed breast star of the Order of the Black Eagle, the Iron Cross founded in 1813, the Military Order of Maria Theresa of the Habsburgs and the Russian Order of St. George. Krüger and his workshop executed a number of versions of the portrait, varying the clothing, the order and not least the background, which were also used for prints. The painterly quality, especially of the face, suggests that this painting, which is significant both historically and in terms of art history, was executed by the artist himself in 1830 or shortly thereafter.
