Lot no. 1652
Franz Krüger (1797 Großbadegast - 1857 Berlin) attr; King Frederick William III of Prussia Representative half-profile bust portrait to the right, in the background a view of the Kreuzberg monument completed in 1821 according to Schinkel's design and the silhouette of Berlin. After the victory over Napoleon, Frederick William had himself portrayed here in a dark blue general's uniform coat as the supreme warlord, to which the Kreuzberg monument in the background (as a national monument to the wars of liberation) also refers. He is wearing the highest honours of the Holy Alliance: the eight-pointed breast star of the Order of the Black Eagle, the Iron Cross founded in 1813, the Military Order of Maria Theresa of the Habsburgs and the Russian Order of St. George. Krüger and his workshop executed a series of versions of the portrait, in which the clothing, the order and, not least, the background vary, after which prints were also created. Oil on canvas, double; 78 cm x 65.5 cm. Frame. Cf.: Margarethe Cohn: "Franz Krüger. Leben und Werke", Diss. Breslau 1909, no. 42-44. Comparative portraits can be found in the Gleimhaus in Halberstadt (inv. no. A 196) and in the National Museum in Stockholm. The depicted uniform coat with honours is preserved in the DHM in Berlin. Attributed to Franz Krüger (1797 - 1857). Oil on canvas.
