Statuettes of a Roman woman and a king as allegories of antiquity and the Middle Ages
Ceramic, sand-coloured to reddish, slightly fireclayed body, freely modelled, hollowed inside; white tin glaze and polychrome glaze or inglaze painting. Fully sculpted statuettes, the Roman woman with golden headdress and bracelet in a floor-length, light turquoise blue dress, the king in stylised medieval costume. H. 57 cm.
The Viennese ceramist and sculptor Franz Iskra was a trained potter and studied at the Academy. There are stylistic references to the ceramics of Dina Kuhn (1891 - 1963), who studied under Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Michael Powolny and designed over 100 ceramic figures for the Wiener Werkstätte. In 1932, Franz Iskra's ceramics were exhibited in the Vienna Werkbund Estate.
