Giambologna - the court artist of the Medici in Florence - achieved the most magnificent realisation of the legend of the Rape of the Sabine Women as a sculpture with this all-round, complex, spiralling composition of three different nude bodies, perfectly balanced on all sides. This is also considered one of the most perfect embodiments of Mannerist sculpture. His larger-than-life marble sculpture can still be admired today in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence; smaller versions in bronze were also quickly created in Giambologna's workshop. Giambologna's "Rape of the Sabine" inspired many sculptors of the following generations until well into the 19th century, who also created numerous variations such as this bronze with its richly reliefed plinth and rocaille base.
