A student of Jules Lefebvre at the Académie Julian, Frédérique Vallet-Bisson had a long career as a portrait painter in fashionable Paris from the end of the 19th century to the 1940s. Known for having been Auguste Renoir's lover, Vallet-Bisson was above all an artist renowned for her works exhibited at the Salon, particularly her large pastel portraits. She was also a member of the Société des artistes français and vice-president of the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs, which campaigned for the place of women on the French art scene.
