Friderician tabatiere commemorating the Battle of Zorndorf on 25 August 1758 and the associated Prussian victory in the Seven Years' War Copper, gilded and enamelled. Rectangular with a narrow, multi-profiled copper mount. On a hinged, slightly domed lid a wide view of the battlefield in front of the burning town of Zorndorf depicted on the horizon. On the left with King Frederick II and his generals on horseback. The wall decorated with triumphal bundles and two scenes inscribed in French depicting the dramatic situation leading up to the decisive attack by cavalry general Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz. The underside of the base with a detailed occupation map, dated; on the inside of the lid a portrait of Frederick II in the blue officer's coat of infantry regiment no. 15/I and tricorn hat. Next to him the Prussian eagle with a laurel wreath in its beak. In the background several tents of the encampment, surrounded by rising clouds of smoke. Polychrome enamel painting. Partial hairline cracks. H. 3.8 cm. 8.3 cm x 6.7 cm. Provenance: from the important collection of the Frankfurt banking family von Bethmann, which grew over generations. Cf.
