Lot no. 1649
Friederike Juliane (Julie) von Lisiewska (1772 Dessau - 1856 Wismar) Self-portrait In her early bust portrait from 1794, she portrays herself at the age of 21 or 22, looking very ladylike and self-confident in the fashion of the time, dressed in a dark blue dress over a white blouse. Her expression emphasises her large, sparkling eyes. The painting shows a sensitive classicist style. Only a small part of her once extensive oeuvre has survived; Professor Helmut Börsch-Supan was only able to identify around 65 paintings by the portrait and genre painter, who came from an important family of artists. Her father was Christian Friedrich Reinhold Lisiewski, with whom she also received her first training in Berlin and Ludwigslust. As early as 1786, she produced two pastel portraits of Duchess Luise. From 1792, a scholarship from the ducal couple enabled her to become a pupil of Christian Bernhard Rode, the director of the academy, in Berlin. In 1793, she was accepted as an honorary member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. The artist was represented at the Berlin Academy exhibitions of 1793-1806, 1810, 1822, 1826 and 1826-1840 with over 50 portraits and genre paintings. Oil on canvas; signed and dated on verso.
