After attending the Old Town Grammar School, where he was a fellow pupil of Franz Kafka, he studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts from 1904, but was expelled in 1905 for 'art revolutionary activities'. He then continued his studies in Antwerp and Paris. Back in Prague, he joined young artists at the Café Union and co-founded the 'Osma' group in 1907. In 1910, he married and moved to Berlin, where he took part in exhibitions organised by the New Secession and had his first solo exhibition in 1912. He then turned increasingly to graphic art and book illustration. In 1918 he was a co-founder of the 'Free Movement' in Vienna, and in 1928 a founding member of the Prague Secession. In 1932, he travelled to Palestine, where his impressions shaped his art. In 1937, 19 of his works were confiscated and destroyed as part of the 'Degenerate Art' campaign. After the German occupation of Prague in 1939, he was briefly interned, but was able to emigrate to London with the help of British authorities. He remained artistically active there until his death in 1965 and was involved in exile life, particularly in the Ben Uri Art Gallery.
