FRIEDRICH NERLY Erfurt, 1842 - Venice, 1919 Venice, Island of San Giorgio Signed Nerly bottom left Oil on canvas, 32.5 x 59.5 cm Provenance: Rome, Giosi Collection Friedrich Paul Nerly, known as Nerly the Younger, was among the most sensitive protagonists of landscape painting in the late 19th century. The son of the Vedutist Friedrich Nerly the Elder, he inherited his father's love of Venetian light and the atmospheric rendering of landscapes, but was able to direct his research towards more modern and lyrical results. His training took place in an international cultural context: he studied in Munich and travelled extensively in Europe, between Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy, absorbing the influences of German Romantic Realism and French Impressionism. However, his painting always retained a deeply personal matrix, marked by a refined sensitivity to light variations and the intimacy of the landscape. His pictorial language, technically solid and vibrant with colour, straddles the Romantic tradition and modern sensibilities, partly anticipating the Italian Impressionist vision. Nerly's painting is never mere description but a continuous dialogue between nature and the soul, between the truth of the landscape and its inner resonance. .
