Initially influenced by Art Nouveau, he mostly created figurative compositions and animal depictions, and from around 1910 onwards, he created heroic and monumental group paintings. Overall, Hegenbart worked primarily as an etcher, influenced by Max Klinger. Hegenbart initially trained as a musician in Prague; his father was a cellist at the Prague Conservatory. From 1886 to 1887, Hegenbart studied sculpture at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts under Antonín Lhota. From 1888, he studied painting, first in Munich and then at the Städel Institute in Frankfurt, both times under Johann Frank Kirchbach. Around 1903/1904, he taught at the Women's Academy in Munich for about three years. From 1907 to 1910, he worked in Darmstadt; He was responsible for the ornamental decoration and allegorical depictions in the Hochzeitsturm (wedding tower) on the Mathildenhöhe, built by Joseph Maria Olbrich. In 1910, Hegenbart moved to Munich, where he worked for the "Jugend" (Youth) and "Fliegende Blätter" magazines. From 1902 to 1912, he was a member of the Hagenbund (Hagenbund). Hegenbart designed the poster for the 10th Hagenbund exhibition (II/1904). In the catalogue for the 1922 Hagenbund exhibition in Košice, he was referred to as a "Ländliches Mitglied" (rural member); none of his works were exhibited.
