After an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator in his hometown of Bartenstein, Eartern Prussia, he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (school for arts and crafts) in Hamburg. Between 1919 and 1927, he attended the class of Julius Wohlers and Willy von Beckerath. Then he made a study trip to West Africa. Around 1930, he moved into a studio together with the sculptors Herbert Mhe, Richard Haizmann, Karl Schümann, Paul Henle and the painter Otto Thämer. Fritz Schirrmacher died in Hamburg in 1948. A lot of his works show common people like papergirls and craftsmen and subjects from St. Pauli in Hamburg. The oeuvre of Fritz Schirrmacher is characterised by a strict objectivity showing people in harmony and attachment with their surroundings.
