He had all the rigour of numbers that made him a perfect accountant and, on the other hand, the soul of a true artist. An early visitor to Art Basel, he frequented contemporary art fairs and happenings in Zurich, befriended Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, and enjoyed having his works autographed (lots 2242 to 2244). A compulsive collector, he accumulated hundreds of works in his home. An avid fan of comic strips, he liked to meet their authors (lots 1870 to 1875). An artist himself, he felt the need to create his own paintings through numerous performances and experiments... His exceptional professional skills and the total trust that could be placed in Richard Berger led him to become chief accountant at Sotheby's Switzerland, where he worked for nearly 40 years, and to collaborate with Piguet for nearly 10 years. All lots marked in green in the printed catalogue are from the Richard H. Berger collection. Futura 2000 These two canvases by Futura 2000 bear witness to the creative dazzle that characterised the early days of New York graffiti in the 1980s. Along with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, among others, he embodies the generation that elevated street art to the status of art exhibited in galleries and museums, inventing a radically new pictorial language. Fresh", produced in 1982, was one of his first explorations on canvas, in which the artist broke with the traditional figuration of graffiti to develop an abstract, cosmic vocabulary drawn from the future, made up of coloured projections and dynamic lines. Two years later, 'Video Games' sums up this evolution in a composition with an explosive rhythm and futuristic resonances. Drawn from the Berger collection, these paintings plunge us into the artist's singular aesthetic, where the raw energy of the spray is transformed into a visionary abstraction, somewhere between urban gestures and interstellar imagination. Unseen on the auction market, these two works are making their mark on the history of street art.
