Lot no. 1805
Gabor Vida (1937 Budapest - 2007 ibid.)
A visit to the pharmacy
Behind a detailed shop counter, in the light of a single paraffin lamp, a pharmacist in a white coat concentrates on preparing a carefully weighed mixture for his patient, who, freezing, tightens her coat and headscarf. Executed in a very finely glazed painting, this is a characteristic work by the Hungarian artist, typical in its depiction of figures and effective use of light. From 1961 onwards, Vida developed a wide range of artistic activities, and in 1977 he began to paint more intensively. He executed his genre paintings with picturesque, nostalgic motifs in old-masterly, finely glazed layers. The special charm of Vida's works lies in the excellent combination of masterly materiality and expressive characterisation of the figures with subtle humour. Like Carl Spitzweg, he often depicted odd-looking older men engaged in their activities and passions. Oil/wood panel. Signed a.; 50 cm x 40 cm. Frame.
