His coastal views testify to the beauty of the Italian coastline, rendered through a limpid and serene painting, attentive to the vibrations of light and the iridescent tones of the sea. Our beautiful painting reveals a poetics suspended between realism and lyricism, in which the natural element blends with a sense of calm and harmony typical of the Neapolitan tradition. The son of painter Raffaele Carelli and brother of Gonsalvo Carelli, Gabriele grew up in an artistic environment permeated by the influence of the Posillipo School, a current that, starting with Pitloo and Gigante, had renewed Italian landscape painting with a new sensitivity for light and direct observation of nature. His training initially took place in Naples, where he assimilated the tradition of veduta and the poetic use of colour typical of southern painting. In 1837, he moved to Rome with his brother, a stay that enabled him to engage with the masters of classicism and the international community of artists in the city. From 1840, he began to travel intensively: he visited England, France and North Africa, experiences that offered him new visual stimuli. Finally settling in London, where he worked for many years, Carelli came into contact with the refined taste of British collectors, always attracted by the Mediterranean atmospheres and luminous landscapes of southern Italy
