Jacques Gaffarel, "one of those strong heads you would think sculpted in Corinthian bronze, lit by a reflection of the Hellenic sun" (Stanislas de Gaïta), was Richelieu's librarian.
The treatise is illustrated with 2 large folded plates and several woodcut figures in the text. Caillet states that they are often missing.
