GAFFAREL Jacques. Unheard of curiosities about Persian talismanic sculpture. Horoscope des Patriarches et lecture des estoilles. [Without place or date], 1650; in-8 of [8] ff, 315 pp, contemporary soft vellum, smooth spine with title in black ink, red edges. Third edition; the first edition appeared in 1629. Jacques Gaffarel, "one of those strong heads you would think sculpted in Corinthian bronze, lit by a reflection of the Hellenic sun" (Stanislas de Gaïta), was Richelieu's librarian. The treatise is illustrated with 2 large folded plates and several woodcut figures in the text. Caillet states that they are often missing. Handwritten notes on a blank leaf, traces of bookplate. Binding a little darkened but pleasant, discreet mark of a rodent at the end of a plate, foxing at the margins. - PHP stamp. Caillet, II, 4293.
