Large in-8, red half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed and finely decorated with small gilt irons on a stippled background, untrimmed, ornamented covers and spine (V. Champs). First edition of this handsome romantic illustrated work, with a title-frontispiece and 45 out-of-text portraits, all finely steel-engraved by Herbert, Jenkins, Stephanof, Meadows, Hayter, Fields, Bostock and others.
The notes were written by Louise Colet, George Sand, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Casimir Delavigne, Philarète Chasles, Frédéric Soulié, etc.
A very fine copy, wide-margined and very fresh, complete with cover and prospectus.
