Lot no. 115
[GALIANI (Ferdinando). Dialogues sur le commerce des bleds. London [Paris], s.n. [Merlin], 1770. In-8, marbled calf, triple gilt fillet, fleurons at the corners, coat of arms in the centre, ornate spine, inner lace, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this work revised and published by Diderot. Galiani criticises the unlimited liberalisation of the grain trade theorised by the physiocrats and introduced into the kingdom by the royal edict of 1764. Dealing with the relationship between the physical structure of a country and its economy, he emphasised the interdependence of agriculture, industry and demography. He opposes the systemic approach of the physiocrats by taking into account factors specific to the country, both physical and demographic, and defends a moderate introduction of freedom into a market that is essential for people's food security. It is an important book in the history of economic liberalism, and one that T. W. Hutchison highlighted the innovative aspects, particularly from a methodological point of view, in Before Adam Smith. A copy of the first edition with the errata leaf. A very fine copy bearing the arms of Emmanuel de Croÿ (1718-1784), Prince of Solre and of the Holy Empire. Knight of the King's Orders and Lieutenant-General of the King's armies in 1759, he fought in the German campaigns of 1760 and 1761. He served as Governor of Condé and Commander for the King in Picardy, Calaisis and Boulonnais, and was elevated to the dignity of Marshal of France in 1783. He wrote Mémoires sur le passage par le Nord (Paris, 1782) and important Mémoires de ma vie manuscripts, in 41 volumes. Discreet restorations to the binding, minor stains to a few leaves. Enclosed: [MORELLET (André)]. Réfutation de l'ouvrage qui a pour titre Dialogues sur le commerce des bleds. London [Paris], s.n., 1770. In-8, shagreened basane, smooth spine decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). Rare first edition. This refutation by the abbé Morellet, from the point of view of physiocratic orthodoxy, of the great work by the abbé Galiani against the liberalisation of the grain trade, was printed as early as April 1770, but was initially banned and only appeared four years later, with a box containing a New Warning dated November 1774. Corners and headpieces restored, spine and spine ends rubbed, slight foxing. I. Galiani: Kress, n°6730 - INED, n°1948 - Einaudi, n°2234 - Weulersse, I, xxvi - Tchemerzine, II, 952 - Adams, DE1. - II.
