Lot no. 162
GARNEREY (Auguste) and Hippolyte LECOMTE. Collection of dramatic costumes, published by Vizentini. S.l.n.d. [Paris, Martinet, Engelmann, e.a., 1819-1822]. 2 volumes large in-8, red half-chagrin with corners, embossed paper boards, smooth spine decorated (Binding of the period). A very rare collection of theatrical costumes from the 1820s, lithographed and published by Augustin Vizentini (1786-1836), who was also a playwright and actor, based on drawings by Auguste Garneray (1785-1824), costume designer for the Paris Opéra and the Comédie-Française, and Hippolyte Lecomte (1781-1857). This lithographic incunabulum, published by Godefroy Engelmann between 1819 and 1822 in installments, is almost never found complete. One of the very few complete copies of the 382 lithographed plates of dramatic costumes coloured at the time, except for one plate in black. The copy does include the lithographed text leaves, i.e. the two delivery covers serving as titles, the intermediate titles and the two tables. Signed autograph letter from Vizentini on a flyleaf: Hommage à l'amitié, without name of addressee. Bindings restored, spines rebacked, delivery covers trimmed too short with loss of some letters, some engravings with shorter margins. Colas, n°2500 - Lipperheide, n°3209.
