This ornament is part of the aesthetic trend associated with
Egyptomania, which developed under the Empire following the

The original composition of this clock,
particularly this superb Egyptian figure, derives from
certain designs by Parisian ornamentalists and architects
created in the last years of the eighteenth century following
Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign. We note
that this Egyptian model was adapted by the bronzemaker
Antoine-André Ravrio, almost certainly based on a model by the sculptor

is held at the Royal Pavilion Art Gallery and Museum
and, like our clock, it also has a dial with Roman numerals.
