Lot no. 128
GARRARD, London. A rare pair of hexagonal silver flatware dishes, the bells resting on dishes engraved with foliage, palmettes and leafy rosettes forming lambrequins in the French Regency style, the openwork vegetable pyramid grip, the rim decorated with a rush of quatrefoil, the finely openwork support, resting on gadrooned ball feet. Bells engraved with the ROTHSCHILD family coat of arms. Mark of Robert GARRARD PANTON STREET, London 1836-42. One stand and two plates dated 1836, one stand and the two bells dated 1842. Height 28 cm. Weight 7800 g. Designed by the silversmith Elie Pacot, active in Lille under Louis XIV, in the early 18th century. Between 1709 and 1710, Elie Pacot produced a very important tableware set of nineteen pieces for an enlightened patron, probably the Duke of Malborough. This set was rediscovered in England more than 100 years later. In 1829, it was bought at the Gwydir sale by GARRARD, who transformed it in order to resell it, notably to the ROTHSCHILD family. Reference works: Christie's New York sale on 23 October 2008, which featured a pair of stoves very similar to ours.
