Lot no. 19
Animated landscapes Set of sixteen temperas on canvas Source: private collection, London Alongside Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain, Gaspard Dughet is one of the main landscape painters of the seventeenth century. A student of Poussin up to 1635, after the latter married his sister Anne-Marie in 1630, Dughet had a passion for landscapes from his early days. Long excursions in the Roman countryside developed his interest in, and love of nature. However, Dughet quickly outgrew the influence and intellectualism of Pousssin and started to focus on landscapes that were closer to reality, where the warm Roman light reveals a shepherd in the bend of a path, streams, trees and mountains being the main subject of his paintings. He received his first important commission in 1635, for the piano mobile of the Muti-Bussi Palace in Rome, where he painted a series of fourteen landscape murals. His patrons include the Pamphili family for their Corso and Navone palaces as well as the palace of Valmontone and the Colonna and Borghese palaces. Already much courted by his contemporaries, his work was very popular in the following century, known in England through the Grand Tour, strongly influencing artists such as Richard Wilson and John Constable. Gasphard Dughet demonstrates here all his talent as a designer, in 16 paintings that form an outstanding collection. Indeed, the few decorative cycles preserved today are mostly frescoes, which are still in place, such as those of the Colonna palace or the Pamphilj palace. Our canvases painted in tempera, of great freshness, perfectly illustrate the art of Dughet. His passion for nature is clearly shown here. Nothing disturbs the tranquillity of these landscapes, where a light wind rustles tree branches. The few figures that animate them, as coloured specks of light, invite the eye to follow paths and water courses that meander up to the mountains. We can sense here the mysterious poetry that permeates the work of Dughet and which is the reason for its success.
