Lot no. 56
Gaspard GRESLY (L'Isle-sur-le-Doubs, 1712 - Besançon, 1756) Trompe-l'oeil with music score and engraving after the monogrammist RH and Trompe-l'oeil with engraving after Pierre Paul Rubens Pair of oil paintings (Original canvases) Signed 'g.gresly' in the engravings lower right Unframed Trompe-l'oeil to the music score and engraving after the monogrammist RH and Trompe-l'œil to the engraving after Pierre Paul Rubens, oils on canvas, a pair, signed, by G. Gresly 23.43 x 16.73 in. 59.5 x 42.5 x 0.0 cm Provenance: European private collection Following the principle of the 'painting within the painting', the artist offers us here the best examples of his trompe-l'œil production. It's a fine tribute to Nordic artists for this Franc-Comtois, who never forgets that his region was part of the Empire, and has not become - culturally - fully French, despite its recent annexation by Louis XIV. The compositions of these two pendants are particularly harmonious: blue or red ribbons, engravings facing each other, an allegory of drawing on one side and music on the other. Both motifs can be found in other compositions by Gresly1, proving that the artist must have had examples in his collection. 1 - For Diogène, see Gaspard Gresly, un peintre franc-comtois au XVIIIe siècle, exhibition catalogue, Besançon, 8 January - 21 March 1994, Bourg-en-Bresse, 15 April - 3 July 1994, p. 118-119, no. 42). For La vieille femme à la chandelle after Rubens, see Le trompe-l'œil plus vrai que nature, exhibition catalogue, Bourg-en-Bresse, 21 May - 4 September 2005, p. 80, no. 30. The buyer must pay import duties of 5.5% in addition to the hammer price unless the lot is immediately re-exported outside the European Union. Lot in temporary importation. In addition to the commissions and taxes, and additional import fees of 5,5% of the hammer price will be charged. The import fees can be retroceded to the purchaser on presentation of written proof of exportation outside European Union.
