Lot no. 151
GASPARE REM (Antwerp 1542 - Venice after 1616) Saint Jerome Oil on canvas, 84X73.5 cm Provenance: London, Bonhams, 29 September 2003, lot 102 (as a follower of Girolamo Muziano) Bibliography: P. Tosini, Girolamo Muziano, 1532-1592, dalla maniera alla natura, Rome 2008, p. 504, no. E39 (cited and referred to Gaspare Rem) Already attributed to a follower of Girolamo Muziano, the canvas was brought back to Gaspare Rem's catalogue by Patrizia Tosini. The Flemish-born artist moved to Venice in 1574, ideally inspired by the models of Tintoretto and Veronese, but also looking to Lombards such as Fede Galizia, Simone Peterzano and the more recent lagoon results of Michele Parrasio and Palma il Giovane. These influences can be clearly felt in the work examined here, which combines the results of the Brescian Renaissance with the nuances of Vecellio's pupils. For comparison, we can cite the work of the same subject in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (fig. 1). Reference bibliography: G. T.
