Lot no. 944
(Gastronomy - Dinner menu) - Carte du dîner. Restaurant du Café de Chartres, Palais-Royal, N° 82. 1784-1820 Broadsheet, on laid paper, 43,3 x 46,5 cm, orn. frame (ms. notes in pen and ink, margins cut to the border, a bit worn with sm. holes). Very rare dinner menu of the "Café de Chartres" before it was sold, in 1820, to Jean Véfour and became the "Grand Véfour". Prices and extra meals were added in pen by a contemporary hand. Opened by the Aubertot lemonade seller in 1784, the "Café de Chartres" became "the most brilliant magnet of Parisian life and above all the birthplace of French gastronomy", not at least because of its famous chef Laguipière (1750-1812) who started working there shortly after the Revolution. Ref. Not in BnF.
