In-4, red box, decorated with three vertical bands of mosaic green box set with a gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated with the same design including the author, title and date in gilt, lining in the same box decorated with a geometric design in gilt in the centre, gilt paper endpapers, cover and spine (Devauchelle). First edition of this major work on the life and work of Gauguin. The illustrations include 88 black and colour reproductions, 62 of which are out of the text. One of 60 first copies on japon, the only ones with an original etching by Paul Gauguin: the portrait of Stéphane Mallarmé known as "au corbeau", executed in Paris in early 1891 as a token of his friendship and admiration for the symbolist poet, and as a tribute to Édouard Manet, who had drawn the famous corbeau in Mallarmé's translation of Poe's poem. This precious print is the only etching by Gauguin. There are only a dozen proofs of the two states printed during the artist's lifetime, in 1891. This second, posthumous edition was produced for Charles Morice around 1919 and consists of 79 bistre proofs on japon, numbered in graphite, 60 of which were added to the japon copies of the work. A very well preserved proof (num. 13/79), carefully framed under a mat (22.5 x 18.5 cm when viewed). A very fine copy in a sumptuous mosaic-lined binding. Without the scratched copper print.
