Lot no. 97
GAULE - CELTIC Aulerques Eburovices. Hemistatere with wild boar, var. 4 ND (early 1st century BC to the Gallic War). Head laurelled on the left, the hair made of two rows of globules, between two beaded lines forming a V; the nose in profile on the left is materialised by the outer side of the triangle of the eye and pointed by a globule. Globule between the legs of the little boar taught upside down under the nape of the neck. Rv. Horse on the right led by a stylised charioteer; between his legs, a boar teaching on the right with globule between the legs; in front of the breast a beaded rosette. LT. - DT.2402 v. - Scheers 287; Gold - 3.05 g - 19 mm - 12 h Of good centering with slight wear on the reliefs, and the fields hardly rubbed. In rather pale gold, the style is good though slightly stylised. Superb. According to the Nouvel Atlas, tome II, p.103: "this type does not evolve much, if it is not by the progressive deterioration of the precious metal" which indicates that the gold coins of better quality, must be at the head of series. However, the boar coins must also be classified stylistically, giving the impression that a relative chronology can be established.
