GAULE - CELTIC Meldes. ROVECA / POOYIKA bronze, class 2 with amphora below base of neck ND (second third of 1st century BC and Gallic War). Head helmeted (?) left, hair pulled back or helmet adorned, torque around neck; in front of face the legend ROVECA and an amphora lying below the base of the neck framed by a ringlet pointed in front of the neck and behind the nape. Rv. Horse left, three pointed rings in a triangle above the back and a 4th between the legs; below the legend POOYIKA. DT.579 - LT.7660 - RIG.242 ; Bronze - 4.04 g - 16.5 mm - 11 h Blank with casting jets. Weaker strike on the right, but the legends are legible on both sides. Beautiful black patina. TTB / Superb. Like the EPENOS bronzes, the three classes of ROVECA / POOYIKA belong to the group of "Centre zone light bronzes". The reverse sides are virtually identical with minor variations, but the styles of the heads and hairstyles are very different. Class 2 is the only one to have an amphora at the base of the neck. For a total of 131 specimens studied, the average weight is 2.84 g. The regional distribution map clearly shows that the workshop responsible for this issue is to be found in the Marne valley, most probably in Meaux.
