La Discorde chez l'ennemi.
Gr. in-8 (25,1 x 16,3 cm), paperback, printed cover.
Very rare first edition of the first book by Charles de Gaulle, then a captain.
It was not printed on large paper.
Charles de Gaulle, taken prisoner during the First World War, used his captivity (when he was not trying to escape) to learn about German political and military life. He gave lectures on this subject to his fellow prisoners. He continued to lecture and train throughout his military career. During his internment in the fortress of Ingolstadt, he met Étienne Répessé, a member of the Arras infantry regiment, who was to become his publisher at Berger-Levrault. The book contains five lectures: "General von Kluck's Disobedience", "The Declaration of Reinforced Submarine War", "Relations with the Allies", "The Fall of Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg" and "The Rout of the German People".
A precious copy corrected and annotated in the hand of General de Gaulle, with 7 handwritten leaves (themselves corrected) relating to the text. The pencil corrections in the text (mostly deletions) do not appear to have been retained for the 1972 reprints by Plon and the 2018 reprints by Perrin.
Redacted letter on verso of title. A typed note indicates "Loan from Admiral de Gaulle", dated 20 December 1982.
Partly uncropped, cover detached, spine a little torn with slight loss; marginal tears to a few leaves.
