Lot no. 349
GAULLE Charles de. 2 L. A. S., 17 and 27 December 1969, to his son Captain Philippe de GAULLE in Brest; 1 page and a half and 2 pages in-8 headed Le Général de Gaulle, the 1st with envelope. On the promotion of Philippe de Gaulle to the rank of admiral, and the progress of Mémoires d'espoir. 17 December. A note from Mr Tricot "confirms that you are on the 'aptitude list'. This is, of course, a secret"... 27th December. "My dear Philippe, Charles brings you this letter. We were very happy to see him. His personality continues to assert itself. I gave him to read what has already been written in my book and I will certainly take into account his judgments, which were fair and well thought out. You will therefore be, quite predictably, an admiral at 49. Nothing exists except in its time and by comparison. In our time and by comparison with others, it's a great career achievement, whatever you seem to think of it"... LNC, III, p. 1097 and 1104.
