Lot no. 272
GAULLE Charles de.
2 L. A. S., 19 March and 8 April 1954, to his son Lieutenant Philippe de GAULLE (in Oran); 3 pages and a half and 2 pages in-8 headed Le Général de Gaulle.
Arrangements for his son's next posting.
19 March. "I have enquired, as you wished, about the possibilities of your forthcoming posting. Admiral Wuillaume, Director of Personnel, said that it would be quite possible, a priori, to give you the post of landing officer on board the Lafayette, a post which, according to him, would correspond well to your rank, seniority and training. But I haven't been able to check whether this is the post of head of aviation services on the aircraft carrier or just a post subordinate to that (deck landing). In any case, Admiral d'Argenlieu, whom I had asked to inform me, told me that Admiral Wuillaume, who seems very well disposed towards you, pointed out that in any case, you should not delay in making the request and that moreover, if you were to pass through Paris some day, he himself would be happy to see you at his office. I think he's right, and that you should drop by the Rue Royale sometime. You are now an officer of sufficiently recognised quality that, without begging, you should make personal contact with those in charge of career administration. [...] I will follow up the matter of your posting"...
April 8th. "I have been told by the Navy that if you apply for the post of head of aviation services on the Lafayette, there is every chance that this post will be given to you as having to be taken at the end of your time in command. You should therefore send your regular application through the hierarchy without further delay and inform me as soon as you have sent it. Once your request has reached the Rue Royale, I could intervene on a specific subject: "My son has regularly asked for this. I'd like him to get what he wants. What is your decision? Unless there are technical impossibilities (seniority, qualifications, age, etc.) which, I believe, do not exist, there is no doubt that we will do as I wish"...
