GAULLE Charles de. 2 L. A. S., 4 October and 5 November 1967, to his son Captain Philippe de GAULLE in Lorient; 2 pages in-8 each headed Le Général de Gaulle, envelopes enclosed. 3 October. "My dear Philippe, Between now and the end of this year, you will find yourself in a crucial period of your command. Needless to say, my thoughts will often be with you and the Suffren. Your future cruise: Dakar, Rio, Recife, Las Palmas, must be, in every respect, of great interest. Before that, the firing and exercises in the Mediterranean will also be of great interest. When the time comes, let me know what conclusions you have drawn. As for business as a whole, I believe that it is progressing satisfactorily, despite the great efforts made by the opponents to pretend otherwise. In fact, the regime and its policies are continuing"... 4 November. "My dear Philippe, I would like to thank you for the affectionate greetings you sent me on my birthday. You know that mine are always with you, especially in your current command. All of us here will be watching television tomorrow, where the Suffren will appear as one of the characteristic elements of our modern force. As I am well aware of the particular obligations that will inevitably fall to you during the four ports of call of your forthcoming cruise, and to help things go 'well' without being naturally excessive, I am sending you something to that effect. As for general matters, they are taking their course without any drama"... LNC, III, p. 920 and 931.
